May 2003, IRSS has created a guidebook describing the use of trauma healing and related psychological and social-support activities as contributors to the development of a stable, peaceful and functional society in a post- conflict environment. The guidebook, entitled "Psychosocial Healing: A Guide for Practitioners," can be purchased or downloaded from this site.

 

Policy and technical discussions about the vulnerability of nuclear power plants and their spent fuel to acts of malice
The terrorist attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001 have spurred intense interest in the vulnerability of nuclear facilities. This is an issue that is highly relevant to IRSS's work in two program areas: Global human security; and Energy and environment. IRSS has fielded numerous requests for information by the media and citizens. Also, IRSS has been invited to participate in a number of discussions, including those listed below:

2 July 2002, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts: Technical seminar titled "Radiological Hazard Posed by Nuclear Power Plants and Spent Fuel." IRSS was one of the organizers of this seminar; Gordon Thompson of IRSS made a presentation.

1 July 2002, State House, Boston, Massachusetts:
Public symposium sponsored by Representative Matthew Patrick. Gordon Thompson of IRSS was an expert panelist at this symposium.

15 May 2002, NRC Headquarters, Rockville, Maryland:
Technical discussion organized by Dr Irwin Redlener of Montefiore Hospital, New York. Gordon Thompson of IRSS participated in this discussion with US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of non-government organizations.

7 May 2002, Council Chambers, City Hall, New York:
Public hearing before the Committee on Environmental Protection, Council of the City of New York. The City Council invited IRSS to provide oral and written testimony; IRSS did not appear but provided written testimony.

29 April 2002, Capitol Building, Washington, DC:
Technical and policy briefing sponsored by US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and US Representative Nita Lowey
