Institute for Resource and Security Studies

IRSS was founded in 1984 to conduct research and public education on the protection of natural resources and the promotion of international security. As a small organization, IRSS expands its reach by working in partnership with other organizations. Our work ranges from grass-roots field programs to policy interventions in international forums.

One focus of IRSS’s work has been at the intersection of energy and the environment. An industrial society’s use of energy is a pillar of its wealth but also generates major environmental impacts. We have done numerous studies on the impacts of nuclear technologies and on the creation of sustainable societies. The latter arena offers the exciting challenge of adapting new and old technologies and behaviors to the task of building societies that respect environmental limits while meeting people’s social and economic needs.

In the realm of international security, IRSS has developed an internationally-recognized program of peacebuilding in conflict-torn regions. In the former Yugoslavia we helped to develop a cross-regional network of health professionals dedicated to peace and social reconstruction, and have assisted related efforts in the North Caucasus, Middle East, and elsewhere. IRSS has a long history of work on nuclear arms control, including organizing policy forums on the Non-Proliferation Treaty and conducting analysis on the control of fissile materials.

All of these endeavors have a common theme. Humans must share the beautiful and fragile biosphere that cloaks our planet. In doing so, they must respect each other’s well being, dignity and need for security. While daunting, this challenge can be met with intellectual and moral tools that have deep roots in cultures around the world. Applying these tools can provide models for emulation worldwide. IRSS develops and implements such models. We thank our supporters and partner organizations for sharing in this mission.
